I think Orann's comments were made out of fear, not elitism.
To give a bit of history on this, for a long time it was very easy to swap model files. Most people did it just to make their armor look better (like the ), but players started using it for exploitative purposes. Some people would change models to more easily access unreleased zones (*cough*Nogg-aholics*cough*), while farmers would make herbalism/mining nodes visible from a mile away by changing them to something like Lord Kazzak. Furthermore, model swapping knowledge was becoming far more widespread.
A couple of patches ago, Blizzard fixed the loophole that allowed model swapping. A new (albeit more pain in the ass) one was quickly found, and it still exists to this day. Orann isn't purposely trying to be an elitist, he just doesn't want Blizzard to close all the loopholes. Model swapping is pretty much impossible to detect on an individual's computer, so Blizzard tends to find out about the loopholes when players discuss them on the official WoW forums. The less players that know about it, the longer it's going to take Blizzard to find out.
